How to Send Your First Pitch as an Influencer

If you’re just starting out as an influencer or blogger, reaching out to brands might seem incredibly intimidating. Your common thoughts might (very likely) include:

  • Do I have enough followers?

  • Is my engagement high enough?

  • Who do I contact?

  • What’s a media kit?!

  • What should my pitch look like?

I can confidently say right now that you should take a deep breath. It’s not as intimidating as it seems! As someone who constantly receives email pitches from influencers who are looking to work with my clients, I can quickly sort through the good, the bad, and the ugly (ugly media kits, that is… sigh, you don’t know how many of these are our there!).

Let’s quickly go through all of your worries and squash them right now!

Number of Followers

First things first, stop worrying about the number of followers you have! There’s been a recent development of “microinfluencers” who have less than 10k followers and are constantly working with brands. As long as you have great engagement and active comments on your photos, you shouldn’t be worried about a thing!

After all, there’s millions of different companies out there - one is bound to say yes to you!

Know Your Niche

If you’re just starting out as an influencer and don’t have a large following, I would recommend starting small. That means, research the small companies that don’t necessarily have a large influencer marketing budget.  But wait, if they have a large influencer marketing budget, then they’d be more willing to work with me, right? I know, I know. This might seem contradictory. But truth of the matter is that brand like Forever21 and Winc are saving their budget for the larger influencers.

Another note to remember is to really tailor your list of brands based on your interests and the interests of your followers. Don’t just mass-email every company out there. You need to be able to truly sell the product - and who wants to sell a product that they absolutely hate? i.e. don’t pitch that golf club company when you’ve never golfed in your life.

Prep Your Media Kit

It's simple. If you truly want to jump into this crazy Instagram Influencer-led world, you're going to need a media kit. Think of your media kit as a digital resume that encompasses everything from social media channels, interests, and costs. Especially when you're reaching out to companies, they want to be able to quickly glance over your media kit and immediately understand your entire social brand and what you can bring to their own marketing efforts.

Make sure it includes: your social channels, demographics of your followers, about yourself, rates, services, previous work, contact information. More details about what your media kit should look like

What Should Your Pitch Look Like?

Time and time again, I’ve received very basic, incomplete emails from influencers that I wouldn’t even necessarily call a pitch!

“Hi, I saw your brand and I would love to be sent some product so I can review it.”

I’m serious. No media kit, no social media links - nothing! Not only will in make the PR Manager’s job harder, but you’re not adequately selling yourself to them. They get hundreds of pitches every week, so you need to convince them to work with you.

Below is a simple example of a pitch that will help you stand out from the rest and deliver all the info brands need in order to decide if they want to work with you.
